MOTORSPORTS EXPO 2016 KICKS OFF EMPIRE STATE RACING SEASON IN STYLE

(Syracuse, NY)…After a long off season, the New York State racing fraternity came back together last weekend for the first major event on the New York State racing calendar, the 30th annual Motorsports Expo show. A very nice spring like weekend brought out a great crowd of entertainment starved race fans to check out the new racing equipment and experience everything the annual rite of spring has to offer.

There was plenty for those fans to see with well over 200 racing vehicles representing just about every discipline of Motorsports on display as part of Motorsports Expo 2016. From Microds to Modifieds and everything in between, race teams brought some great-looking equipment to Motorsports Expo 2016. The level of craftsmanship and artistry displayed on the various racing vehicles taking part in the show was at an all time high. Plenty of new cars featured all new color and graphics schemes for the upcoming season with many teams drastically upgrading the appearance of their equipment over the winter months.

With the quality of the equipment on display at an all time high, the Terrell Potato Chip Best Appearing Car Award recognizes the best of the best, awarding a handsome trophy to the team selected as Best Appearing by Motorsports Expo judges. Picking up the 2016 Ferris Mowers Best Appearing Car award was the eye- catching green Top Dragster owned and driven by Vince Musolino. This marked only the second time that a drag racer has walked away with Best of Sow honors, and both times a drag racer won the award went to Musolino, who also was the Best of Show winner in 2008. With the quality of the equipment on display in 2016, winning this prestigious award certainly starts Musolino’s new season off right. .

Earning the Ferris Mowers Best of Show Award at Motorsports Expo 2016 was the Easter themed Sprint Car Display of Alysha and Darryl Ruggles. The father and daughter Sprint Car Team competes regularly on Saturday nights in the 305 Sprint Car Division at the Canandaigua Speedway. Their family based team brought a pair of cars with Alysha’s hot pink car displayed next to Darryl’s bright yellow mount. The pair of Danny Wilmes Enterprises/Mike Mastin Engineering Sprint Cars drew plenty of looks not only from show attendees but also show judges.

Pretty much all of the area tracks and sanctioning bodies were represented at Motorsports Expo with schedules cards ready to hand out and representatives on hand to discuss the upcoming season with drivers and fans alike. As they always do, the Empire Super Sprint Series came out in force with six cars displayed in their booth as the series kicks off their 33rd season. The Patriot Sprint Group also had a good number of cars on hand as did both Utica Rome and Canandaigua Speedways. The Race of Champions Series was represented along with the new American Modified Pavement Series which makes its debut at Chemung on May 1st.

A good number of vendors of various types of products were on hand as well to market their products. Vendors from ten different states spent the weekend selling their wares to an eager crowd. Racers and race teams had the opportunity to check out some of the newest and latest equipment for their racing needs while fans had a wide variety of souvenir and collectable vendors to check out.

Motorsports Expo officials would like to thank all of the sponsors that made the 2016 edition of Motorsports Expo possible. Ferris Mowers, Bob Hilbert Sportswear, Mitchell’s Speedway Press, Sunoco Race Fuels, Terrell potato Chips,, and Leaf Racewear were all recognized for their contribution to Motorsports Expo 2016.

Plans are already in the works for the 2017 edition of Motorsports Expo which will take place March 11th and 12th, 2017. For all of the latest news regarding Motorsports Expo 2016, log onto the Gater Racing News web page at www.gaternews.com.

Action Packed Weekend!

The 30th anniversary edition of Motorsports Expo takes place in the Center of Progress Building on the New York State Fairgrounds,. Motorsports Expo 2016 will open to the public on Saturday, March 12th with public hours from 10AM-8PM. On Sunday, March 13th, the show hours are 11AM-4PM. Set-up will take place on March 11th as vendors and participants will be getting everything ready for the official show opening on Saturday morning

In addition to nearly 200 racing vehicles of all shapes and sizes, most of the area speedways will also be on hand distributing schedule cards for the upcoming season. There will also be vendors on hand selling the latest memorabilia and collectables as well as vendors of speed equipment for those race teams needing to pick up some items to finish off their 2016 rides.

For the first time in the 30 year history of Motorsports Expo, the 2016 edition will feature a Racer’s Flea Market presented by Promotion Custom Metal Fabrication. The Spring Flea Market will give race teams the chance to buy some last minute parts as well as to raise some cash by selling off some parts that are no longer needed.

Vendors are currently being sought for this first edition of the Spring Racer’s Flea Market. The cost is a very reasonable $50 for a ten foot by ten foot square booth. The only stipulation to this is that the flea market is limited to the sale and trade of used Race Parts and Equipment only. With a building full of racers and race cars, vendors should find no shortage of potential customers looking for some last minute parts.

As has become a tradition at Motorsports Expo, the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers will present their annual Charity Auction. The auction features a great assortment of unique, one of a kind items donated by members of the racing community to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The event raises funds for the Spalding Foundaton Injured Driver Fund, which provides financial assistance to drivers and other individuals injured in Motorsports related events. The Charity Auction takes palce on Saturday afternoon at 3 PM.

Noted Automobile Racing Historian and “The Race Report” correspondent Dr. Gary George will be offering his “History of the Syracuse Mile” presentation as part of the 2016 edition of Motorsports Expo. With the Expo taking part in the Center of Progress Building on the New York State Fairgrounds, it is only appropriate that George commemorate the long and storied history of racing at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Dr. George is a race fan who attended many races on the Syracuse Mile, holding both a Doctorate and Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. He is an Adjunct Professor at the State University of New York in the area of Motorsports Engineering.

When the ultimate demise of the Syracuse Mile following the conclusion of the 2015 edition of Super DIRT Week, Dr. George was commissioned to prepare a history of racing on the Syracuse Mile by the international Motorsports Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY. Dr. George completed the six month research project with the assistance of noted Southern Tier area racing historian Mike Monnet and fellow racing historian and owner of the car that carried Cliff Kotary to multiple victories on the Syracuse Mile, Jeff Ackerman. The project traces the history of racing on the Syracuse mile from the first automobile race on the Mile through the final race in 2015.

Dr. George’s extensive research traces the history of racing at the New York State Fairgrounds from its earliest beginnings through the final race in 2015. In the interest of having the presentations run within a desired 60-90 minute time frame, Dr. George will be presenting his seminar in two parts. The first part will be presented on Saturday night at 5:30 PM and will cover the start of racing on the Mile and will cover the history of racing up until the start of Super DIRT Week in 1972. The second session will be presented on Sunday at 12:30 and that session will cover the history of Super DIRT Week.

Motorsports Expo and Trade Shows is made possible by loyal sponsors Ferris Industries, Bob Hilbert Sportswear, Area Auto Racing News, Mitchell’s Speedway Press, Sunoco Race Fuels by Insinger Performance, and Flag 2 Flag Racing Classifieds.

This years event is shaping up to be the biggest ever with the cars and stars from all kinds of racing on hand. Management is encouraged by all the early phone calls to date. The latest information can be found by logging onto
