Follow up on My Shocking Pocono Story and BMW in NASCAR?

through a sobriety check point on my way home from the track. The check point was very close to the track. About a week after the story I received an e-mail from Lt. Will Laverty of the Pocono Mountain Police Department informing me that he was available for further information. I thanked him via e-mail and simply asked for the statistics of the detail.

I received the following press release:

“POTTSVILLE, PA – The North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program and the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department have announced results from a Sobriety Checkpoint conducted on Long Pond Rd. (SR 4002) on June 7, 2009 from 4:00 PM until 8:30 PM. Officers from four counties and 22 police departments, including County Detectives’ from the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, participated in the checkpoint”

The statistics were as follows:
Cars stopped: 1,270
Drivers detained for further evaluation: 40
Drivers charged with DUI: 23
Under aged drinking arrests: 2
Disorderly conduct arrests: 3
Open container arrest: 1
Drug possession arrest: 1
Traffic Citations: 20
Warnings issued: 13

So, 3.15 % of all the drivers leaving the raceway and stopped were further evaluated. That is better than I thought it would be. Its certainly not good that ANYONE is drinking and driving but based on my observations I thought it would be much worse. I would like to publicly thank Lt. Laverty for the follow up.

FOREIGN CARS TO NASCAR - Honda, Nissan, BMW and other ‘foreign’ car manufacturers make cars in the U.S. just like Toyota does. So what is all the hoopla about Brian France, NASCAR Chairman, saying that “There’s some companies that are going to look at opportunities that may not have even been there in the past that could be presented in the future.”?
With two of the manufacturers in bankruptcy (GM and Chrysler) and the third (Ford) struggling mightily, what is NASCAR supposed to do? An Associated Press story said that GM’s decision to no longer support the lower NASCAR series has costs people their jobs at some shops.

Fans have complained for years about the cars NASCAR uses, the lack of identity with the manufacturers and brand loyalty being thrown aside. What about NASCAR’s loyalty to American manufacturers? That loyalty doesn’t matter when the chips are down and France needs to consider the future, which could include those named companies above. I say great.
Let me also tell you about my GM vehicles. The two that I had to replace the rotors and brakes on with less than 20,000 miles on 2 new vehicles, all the way around!! The costs to repair were in excess of $1,700!!! Do you know what I was told was wrong?

The CHEAP CHINESE STEEL USED IN THE ROTORS FAILED!!!

American car makers my butt. Its 2009 folks, all companies are global. Don’t continue kidding yourselves. The more competition in NASCAR the better I say.

Ed---learn how to....spell. Last time I checked it was...Chinese steel...maybe?

Who really cares, as NA$CAR is pretty lame with the COT anyways.

Support your local track instead of filling Brian France's pockets full of "foreign-money".

Ed's Response: Fabio - thanks for writing... Must be my typing just sucks and spell check did not grab the error. Please except my humblest apologies (PUN INTENDED)...

You care, you know you do, or why are reading??

Why not have officers warning fans outside the gates not to drink and drive?
ANYONE that has ever been to a NA$CAR event will tell you that drinking and an open container are overlooked directly after the event. Officers overlooked people drinking after the event and then proceeded to pull fans off a few miles down the road.
I am not saying it is right to drink and drive at all, but it is not right to bait people into a DUI.
The drinking after the event is not just NA$CAR, this covers all motorsports. It's overlooked.

Ed's response: Drinking and driving is overlooked? I'm not so sure about that. If you're driving by a cop directing traffic and you're driving with a beer in your hand and he sees you what is he going to do?? Nothing, he can't.

I wondered if the track was aware of the impending road block and if they publicized it at all. Were they under obligation to? Absolutely not. Every driver knows the law and if they break it, for any reason and get caught, its their own damn fault.

Love both my Lexus, neither has ever needed any repairs, one is 9 years old
When Chevy, Ford and Chrysler make as good a Car, I will consider buying one.
If these ever wear out

Ed's Response: Don, you win some and you lose some. Sounds like you won with those vehicles. Of course we all know people that haven't with the same car.

If you are wearing out brakes on your cars in 20,000 miles, it says more about you than it does about the cars.

I replaced front brakes on my wifes 2003 mustang @ 51,000 miles and now, at 83,000, the rear need replacement.

The fact that the auto repair shop told you that the problem was "cheap Chinese Steel" was to put the blame elsewhere and not on you the driver.

$1,700 for brake repair on two cars @ 20,000 miles. If you let them talk you into the High dollar, Hig Performance Ceramic pads and rotors that were intended for high performance vehicles, then you might have had to spend that much. Otherwise, it shouldn't have cost you more than about $450 per car. I think, as we say in the south, "Somebody sure saw you coming."

Ed's Response: Old Dude, you're making presumptions now aren't you?? I live north of Syracuse NY where we average in excess of 140 inches of snow a year. We have salt and grime on the roads in excess of 6 months a year. How well do you think a rotor, made of garbage steel will last trying to stop a Tahoe or a Trail Blazer that primarily travels at 55+ miles per hour. You know what Chevy told me when I complained about the Trail blazer? "You don't drive it enough and the rotors are falling apart because of it.. its a maintenance issue and not covered under warranty"!!

As far as the costs go.. I fixed the Trail blazer myself with GENUINE GM parts, middle of the road pads. Of course I had to replace all rotors too... with a friend in the repair business I got them well below retail for $275.

I found out later that if I had the dealer fix the better business bureau would have paid me back the $800 the dealer would have charged me.

For the Tahoe, why am I explaining myself to you? I'm not running these things at Martinsville. Trust me that service manager doesn't ever want to see me coming in there for brake work...

So, see how wrong you can be when you make presumptions??

None of the American branded cars currently in NA$CAR are made in the United States. Two are made in Canada and the other is made in Mexico. The only foreign branded car is made in the USA. Since they are all identical any way, what difference does it make. Since the foreign car makers haven't made antique engines in many years (or ever), maybe they can outsource their engine program to Toyota and their only contributions they will have to come up with is money and decals.

Ed's Response: You spell NASCAR funny...

This was a pretty good article i enjoyed reading it,

i really have no comment about the road block thing so no comment there.

as for the foriegn/american thing... ive been going on about this since 06 and i found out that 'yota was coming to nascar which ticked me off, but upon research which took the better part of a year i saw that the toyotas are more american than the freakin "american" (Big three) company's so i support them now, i live in indiana and have seen the toyota plant here they are made, built and assembled right there and in texas too.

where does GMs majority come from?
China, Mexico, Canada and probobly anywhere else they can get cheap labor for maximum profit on thier product, in a world where money dominates everything nothing much is fair, im 16 years old as i write this and im sad to see where this country is now as to where it was a hundred years ago, im shopping for my first car and have always dreamed of owning a camaro but thanks to the economy i just may go with a foreign car.

Hey Candraco- thanks for writing... by the time your my age things will change even more, its part of life...

(oh btw, if Porsche ever decided to get back in nascar, nascar will find a whole new following ;) )

I too agree that crapcar has moved away from the premise that made it a great marketing tool for vehicles. Which was to win on sunday meant you could sell on monday. I don't see chevy, ford, and doges racing on sunday anymore and haven't since the late 80's. I see IROC cars. Also, no one wants to purchase American made vehicles anymore, bc in order to pay for the Union greed over the years that is now debt for the company, companies are forced to use cheaper steel, while still charging an outrageous amount for a vehicle. Just bc you pay 35 grand for a vehicle, doesn't mean the parts used to construct it are a factor in the price.

Last note, and off the topic. But regarding Jr. and KyleB., why is Kyle mad at Jr., as in Jr. took his ride or his job at Hen_dick. This simply is not true. I didn't see Jr steal his ride. Jr. isn't nor has he driven the #5 car in competition, aside from when he filled in for Kyle. Mears and Martin filled and currently fill the #5 car. Not Jr. He fills the #88 car. Just another example of drama mama's in play.

Like in F1, perhaps for fans sake team owners/drivers should leave crapcar and form their own series, removing IROC cars, restrictor plates and racing more stock, fuel injected vehicles that fans can relate to.

Ed's Response: Billy Bob Bill Bobby? I took the liberty of breaking up your one big paragraph into a few.

Do you mean that the American vehicles are so costly due to labor costs?? Say it is not so, what about all those hard working people getting all those benefits??

On your other note- Busch said directly to us at Pocono that he had no issues with Earnhardt Jr. and that Casey Mears was the one that took his job, don't you read my column?

That's actually really suprising, I would have thought that more poeple would be drunk after that type of event! I still think that there shouldn't be anyone driving under the influence, but you can't fix all of the problems...
