Saturday night was not the first occasion of a driver displaying his emotions on the Speedway’s historic main straight away.
One instance saw Nolan Swift park his racing machine on the front stretch, only to have the car towed back into the pit area.

Hamilton, Sitterly’s teammate, would go on to the night’s big win over Barnes and Dave Danzer. Sitterly would end with a DNF 12th place finish, while Gruel crossed the line 10th.
At race’s end Gruel was available for comment, and was not at all pleased with Sitterly’s attempt.
“I didn’t see anything until we actually made contact,” Gruel said. “It was that bonzai deal, he’s done it to a lot of cars, and he’s done it to me a couple times and wrecked me a couple times doing it. I have given him all the chances in the world and I just want him to race clean with me. I didn’t see him until we made contact and that says to me that he wasn’t far enough in there.”
Saturday’s incident was not the first time Gruel and Sitterly have come together during hard racing. In June of last year the two touched in Oswego’s third corner sending Sitterly directly into the third turn wall, ending his night.
During the 2012 Fall Championship the two drivers again brushed wheels in nearly the same fashion as this past Saturday night, with Sitterly pulling in low on Gruel into the first corner. Each car washed up and out of the racing groove, but continued on with no incident.
When asked about their previous altercations, Gruel was very matter of fact.
“Yeah (we’ve talked) and the funny thing is that it is always my fault,” Gruel said on Saturday night. “If it’s a racing deal that is one thing, but when somebody blatantly drives into the side of you and then blames it on you, I just don’t understand it.”
After reaching out to Sitterly on Monday, the defending Novelis Supermodified ‘Kick-Off’ winner had no direct comment on Saturday’s incident. However, Sitterly has previously addressed his mindset in similar situations when asked about his aggressive driving style during his April interview for Oswego Speedway’s Shop Talk.
“When somebody just slips a little out of four and you know you’ve got the pedal down and you beat them into that first turn and hit you hit your spot first, he’s got to back off,” said Sitterly. “If not, then there’s probably going to be contact. Even if you slide out of your line a little bit, you have made your move and beat them to the mark where everybody knows. If he doesn’t back off, or you slide out of your line a little bit, it is unfortunate. The cars are so very close.”
While Saturday night’s incident will be chalked up in most people’s eyes as the product of good hard racing, video of the incident will be available on Inside Oswego Speedway at the Speedway website for fans to formulate their own opinion on Tuesday.
One thing is certain however, the competition level at Oswego Speedway continues to climb, with every inch of racing real estate becoming more valuable and hard side by side racing becoming common place.
The next chance for fans to see the wheel to wheel action produced at the ‘Steel Palace’ will be Saturday, May 25 with the running of the Helena Chemical Company Memorial Weekend “Triple-Header.”
The Race of Champions Modifieds will join the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series and the Novelis Supermodified division for 185-laps of main event action featuring the Jim Shampine Memorial 75, the Richie Evans Memorial 75, and the Tony White Memorial 35.

Each year memories are made, and I have a lot of stories to tell, if you’re interested. Many of which are not for a family blog. Here are some of them. I know these are vague, so feel free to ask for the rest of the story. And please chime in with some of your own Atlantic City memories!

· Repeatedly owning Larry Lee at LCR on the bus ride down was a highlight during several bus trips.
· Searching for HOURS around the city with Mike Bond for our lost travel partner Corey Norton, the last person on earth to get a cell phone. Hours!
· More bus memories include laughing until we cried with Scott Seeley, and “the one who makes the diamonds”.
· Purchasing some excellent jewelry on the Boardwalk with Bob Garafolo proved to be a not so profitable experience.
· Meeting up with an “independent businessman” was good for a chuckle - and a scare, with a race fan to be left nameless.
· It was once discovered by Chris Lupa on an AC run that a bathroom item would work perfectly as a cooler.
· A major popcorn mess on the boardwalk with Keith Gilliam created some excellent pictures.
· Learning a new trick at the Chelsea Pub with Chris Perley.
· A large gambling group had a couple of laughs together and almost made us rich – before it all went away. Thanks for the advice, Nancy Lewis.
· “Virginia City Buffet” is an annual Saturday morning visit, usually our first chance to visit with Floyd Brooks.
· Every year, coincidentally, it’s a different person’s birthday during our traditional Friday night dinner at Hooters. Maybe this year will be Mark Sledziona again, since it actually IS his birthday.
· A late night dunk into the Atlantic Ocean is one story that gets the memories going for many of us. Especially John “Luther” Gray.
· One of my favorite quotes of all times came from a breakfast stop on the way home on Sunday morning, involving a traveler by the name of Andy Noto.
· The “parade” that takes place late night on Friday is always entertaining. As are the dance moves demonstrated by a Mr. Robert Hollenbeck.

Oh – and as long as we’re there, I also look forward to the races! Yeah…those should be fun, also! See you there!

The other part of the discussion was whether or not Evans Mills would be changed to a Friday or Sunday, instead of their current Saturday night schedule. Also not decided yet.

So if they do move to a Friday or Sunday, will they then add the small block supers on a weekly basis? Not likely either, I’m told. But a once monthly small block supermodified event may be a possibility, once the rest of the schedule, and the rest of the divisions are decided upon.

Is that enough non-answers yet?

Changes may be happening at Evans Mills. But they are still down the road. It’s a long winter, race fans!

‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries Highlights 15-Weekend Campaign

OSWEGO, NY (November 2) – Oswego Speedway officially announced its 2013, 15-race weekend schedule featuring the Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS ‘Road to the Championship’ on Friday. The aggressive campaign will once again begin the first weekend in May, but with a twist.

The 63rd season of racing at Oswego Speedway will be marked with two opening events.

‘Opening Week’ jump starts the racing season on May 4 with the introduction of the ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries, which is the first of four ISMA winged-Supermodified events at the fast 5/8 mile oval. The ISMA Supermodifieds will be on hand for a 50-lap main event along with the beginning of the Pathfinder Bank ‘Road to the Championship’ for the SBS Series.

‘Opening Week’ continues the following weekend on May 11 with the 52nd annual Oswego ‘Super Kick-Off’. The event will serve as the opener for the Oswego Speedway Novelis Supermodified ‘Road to the Championship’ with the first of five 75-lap events throughout the course of the 11-race battle for the championship.

The month of May at the Speedway will conclude with the annual Memorial Day Weekend special on May 25 featuring the Richie Evans Memorial 75 for the Race of Champions Modifieds, the Jim Shampine Memorial 75 for the Novelis Supermodifieds, and the Tony White Memorial 35 for the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series.

Moving to early summer sees the return of the ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries on June 8 with another 50-lap special. ‘Road to the Championship’ events are also scheduled for the Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS on June 1, June 15, and June 29.

As always, July features a whirl wind of activity at the Speedway.

Grand Prix Night at the Speedway returns on 4th of July Weekend with extra distance ‘Road to the Championship’ events in conjunction with a special promotion featuring ‘Toys for Tots.’ Race fans who bring a new, unopened, toy to the Speedway on July 6 will receive a FREE combo meal. A spectacular fireworks display will also cap the evening off in grand fashion.

The King of Wings has become one of the more popular open-wheel, asphalt racing events on the racing calendar, and it will return for its fifth installment on July 13 along with the annual Oswego Speedway Old Timer’s Reunion. The event will mark the third round of the ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries at the Speedway and will again take to the card with an extra distance ‘Road to the Championship’ main event for the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series.

The July racing calendar will again finish with SUNOCO Race of Champions Weekend on July 18-20. ‘Road to the Championship’ events for the Supermodified and SBS Series have again been added to the 3-day event with the SBS division hitting the Speedway on July 19 for 50-laps and the Supermodifieds on July 20 joining the always exciting R.O.C. Modified 200.

The month of August features three pivotal events along the ‘Road to the Championship’ for both the Supermodified and SBS divisions, including the lucrative $10,000 to win Mr. Novelis Supermodified and $1,500 to win Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS title events on August 3. Several championship points will be gained or lost on August 3, August 10, and August 17 as the championship road will now end on Track Championship Night on September 14.

With the successful return of Fall Championship Weekend in 2012, the fall special will now be the final point night of the season, crowning overall track champions in both the Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS divisions.

In total, drivers in the Novelis Supermodified division will see a total of eleven events in their quest for the 2013 Speedway championship, while the SBS division will take on fourteen championship mains.

Budweiser International Classic Weekend will look much the same next season as it did in 2012. Classic Week events will kick-off on August 28 and run straight through September 1 with the running of the Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds.

The one main change on the schedule will be the return of the Race of Champions Modifieds on Bud Select 55 ‘First Round Friday’ August 30 with the final of their ‘Triple Crown’ dates at the Speedway.

Joining the Modifieds on Friday will be Novelis Supermodified ‘Fast 14’ time trials along with time trials and heat races for the Bud Light SBS Classic.

Bud Light ‘Super Saturday’ Classic Weekend events will feature the final round of the ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries with the annual running of the Bud Light ISMA SuperNationals 60 along with the Bud Light SBS Classic 60 and the Bud Light TQ Midget Classic.

Other special events on the 2013 Oswego Speedway racing calendar include the Pizza Villa Spring Spruce Up Day on April 20 along with the yearly open test session on April 27.

The ‘Racing for Ronald McDonald’ Walk, which benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York, will return on Saturday, June 8.

Driver autograph sessions are slated for June 15 and August 10.

The ‘Grossman St. Amour/Make-A-Wish Foundation’ 2-seat Supermodified ride will take place on June 15.

The Rusty Wallace Racing Experience will return to the Speedway a total of twelve times during the weekends of May 18, June 22, July 27, and September 7.

Fast Friday test sessions will also be a weekly happening in 2013 with session’s open and available beginning on May 3 from 4:30-8:30pm. New in 2013, the Oswego Speedway Tiki-Bar will be open for each and every Fast Friday this coming season.

Individual event pricing and season ticket packages will be announced shortly. At that time renewals will begin for 2013 Budweiser International Classic Weekend tickets

Thoughts?

—- Supermodified driver Bobby Bond and small block supermodified driver and Hall of Fame member Mike Bond had been attending races with their Dad, and Mom Nancy at Oswego Speedway since they were little kids. Since at least the 70’s, no races have happened at Oswego Speedway without all or most of the family in attendance.

—- Mike and Bob and I have been friends since we were in high school, and Dave and Nancy were always great to me, even as a punk kid. In the early 80’s, my street stock car spent a good part of the winter in the Bond garage, as we did a lot of work on it to prepare it for the season. Dave would always visit with us, and we shared plenty of stories in the shop, and meals in the kitchen. When my parents passed in the early 80’s (Mike was actually with us when my Dad passed of a heart attack), the Bond family was always there with a smile if I needed it.

—- As the years flew by, I hadn’t spent that much time with Dave and Nancy away from the racetrack, but I always enjoyed our visits at the speedway. (Especially when Nancy called me a “little shit” when I first drove Steve Miller’s supermodified at Oswego in 1995.) Dave seemed to seek me out to say hello at the racetrack more this year than in the past, and it was apparent that he still rooted for me, and wanted to see me do well.

—- Nothing I say here can make up for the pain that Nancy, Mike, Bob, Debbie, Brandon, and the rest of the family are feeling right now. I know Nancy will be safe, as both of her sons live within a tenth of a mile of the family homestead, a testament to the closeness of the family. They will get through Dave’s passing together.

—- I know that Dave was VERY proud of his sons, and I know from experience that little by little, the sad moments of losing him will eventually be mixed more and more with the good memories.

—- Rest in Peace, Dave Bond. You will be missed.

—- The following are some excerpts from the column that I wrote about the July 10th, 2010 race, the night that both of Dave Bond’s sons won features at Oswego Speedway. This was a special night for Dave, and a lasting memory now that I hope will bring the family some comfort in the future. I know the look on Dave’s face that night will be with me forever.

—- July 14th, 2010. It was officially BOND night at Oswego Speedway last week! No, not James Bond. (Although he was there. Bob and Mike Bond‘s Dad‘s name is actually James Bond, even though he goes by Dave. There‘s a family secret for you.) Both divisions were dominated by people named Bond, and it was a great night to see.

—- Bobby Bond has been racing in the supermodified division over ten years, and has gone winless the entire time. Fast cars, close calls, and some tough wrecks have been the story for Bobby. It’s been a shock to everyone for the last several years that he has gone winless in the division. Bob spent ten years as a weekly competitor at Oswego from 1998 - 2007, finishing as high as 3rd in points in 2005, but was never able to seal a victory.

—- But July 10th was certainly his night, as he would make history when he and brother Mike both won their qualifying heats AND features, the first time in 60 years that brothers had swept the action at Oswego Speedway. Just a great night for the family and crew, and I was very happy to be there to watch it unfold.

—- And what more can be said about Mike Bond, the best driver in the history of the small block supermodified division? Mike now has 21 (at that time) career feature wins, more than anyone. Ever. Some nights he makes it look easy, and this was one of those nights. But hour after hour in the shop, and a knack for driving are what make Mike the winner that he is. Mike spent many hours working on the car after a wreck the previous week. I’ve never seen a prouder brother in victory lane than the picture I have of Mike standing with baby brother Bobby after his win.

—- The iPhone picture that I have of Bob, Mike, teary-eyed dad Dave Bond, and longtime crew man and friend Ed Matteson in victory lane is one of my new favorite pictures. I can only imagine what it felt like for Dave to see both of his boys win on the same night, and I’m tearing up just thinking about the look on Dave’s face. Mom Nancy wasn’t at the track that night due to some health reasons, but “changed out of my jammies” and called her sister Donna for a speed run to the speedway for the celebration. The laughing and hugging went on for hours. I couldn’t be happier for the whole family, who have dedicated decades to racing as a family. What a great night.

This weekend is my favorite dirt race of the year - the Outlaw 200 at Fulton Speedway! TONS of cars, in six divisions. And weather permitting, the biggest crowd many see this year will be at the 200, formerly known as “The Victoria 200″.

I bet at least 70 modifieds will be in action. Need I say more!?

I have a ton of memories stored away from over the 27 year history at the Vic. Most of them good (like the ridiculously dangerous and inappropriate parties the first few years), and some bad (like an emergency room stay with a friend after a fistfight, and the firing from Gater for some of the carnage at the first couple of parties).

Another memory is the crappy weather that we waited around in all day last year on Saturday, even after the plug was pulled.

So far, the weather report for this weekend looks cold but dry. Which is perfect. I can’t wait for this weekend - see you there!
