A TYPICAL WEEKEND - Off Road Racing at New Egypt - Race # 17

Saturday, April 4 - Today was going to be something different at the New Egypt Speedway. The New Jersey Extreme Off Road Series would be visiting running on a special off road course designed for the occasion. There were eight bumps or moogles set up starting on the homestretch and running through turns one and two and half way down the backstretch. Then the cars would turn into the infield where they encountered two additional bumps and the table top which was a ramp with a plateau with another ramp at the far end to come off.

It is nice to see tracks try some different forms of racing and we give credit to management for trying this venture. There are two more of these affairs scheduled for Saturday, July 11th and Saturday, September 26th. If you enjoy off road racing make sure you get out to one of these for the support. Several hundred fans showed up for the first one on a sunny but very windy day with temperatures in the 50’s. Racing started right on time at 1 PM with the first of two rounds of racing for the 4/6 cylinder trucks which brought a field of 8. The stock buggies were next up with a 4 buggy field followed by the V8 trucks and there first round with 2 trucks and 2 jeeps. Next up were two sets of one on one match races featuring the rock climbers who ran a special course which included two areas of rocks and an area of logs. The last of the off road classes were the pro buggies and their 7 buggy field. Thre was a second round for each of the above classes plus the rock climbers ran a five lap race with 4 vehicles. All racing was started in turn four with a land rush start which means all the cars lined up in a staggered start and took off at the same time as the green waved.

By 3:30 it was feature time and the rock climbers led off the round of features with a 5 lap contest with only 2 vehicles remaining for the run. Doug Bigelow swept the division winning his match race, heat round and the feature. Up next were the 4/6 cylinder trucks for a ten lap tussle with Caminiti (sorry but a first name was not provided all day) scoring another complete sweep. Steve Seistrand becoming the third driver to sweep his division winning the 8 lap main event. The 12 lap V8 trucks were off and running at 4:02 and Scott Smith continued the domination winning this one. Last up were the pro buggies and their 10 lap feature was won by Betler (another with no first name provided) with the final checker waving at 4:27. It was a good day of afternoon racing with something out of the ordinary to provide the entertainment.
